Olympian's visit to Falkner House

1st February 2012

Today we were lucky enough to have Olympic Gold Medal winning rower Pete Reed visit the school. He watched the finals of our inter-house Ergo (rowing machine) competition, which was between Finches and Larks. Each boat had eight girls, two from years 3,4,5 and 6, with the rower having to complete 50m as fast as they could. It was very, very close but in the end Pete adjudged that Finches were the victors.

After the race we had a question and answer session with Pete and found out lots of interesting information such as he trains at least 3 times a day and that he has the highest lung capacity ever recorded! Of course we thought that he should prove this, so we held a balloon blowing up competition. Ten girls from years 4 to 6 challenged Pete to see how big they could blow a balloon with one breath.  Not suprisingly Pete won, he blew up the balloon to full size in just one breath!

We would all like to thank Mr and Mrs O'Leary for the kind loan of their rowing machine, Mrs Dixon for organsing the event and of course Pete Reed for taking time out from his busy training schedule to come and see us.
