Year 5 at the Leonardo Exhibition
1st February 2012
On Wednesday, Year 5 went to see the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition. I was amazed to see all the paintings especially one called "The Lady with an Ermine". Her innocence and beauty drew everyones attention. It was difficult to try drawing her. We were lucky enough to have had a lecture from the mother's of Selma, Esther and Tatiana about Leonardo da Vinci, otherwise I am sure I would have drifted past some of the drawings. We saw both versions of The Virgin of the Rocks, one more gentle with greenery and the other full of blues. Unlike the first, the second painting showed Mary, Jesus and John the Baptist wearing halos. We also saw a copy of the Last Supper and we saw sketches Leonardo had done in preparation for it. He must have really thought about the personality for each disciple. I saw studies of the mouth of a woman, the fold of a cloak, the paw of a dog, the hand, the foot, the nose and the fold of a curtain. Leonardo da Vinci worked hard on detail and that is probably the reason he only finished twelve paintings in his life. We also saw some of the paintings Leonardo's pupils did, which looked excellent but none had quite the beauty of Leoardo's work. We saw that no picture could ever quite be made to look as wonderful as Leonardo's, it was as if his paintings were even more beautiful than reality. Thank you to Selma's mother for giving us this wonderful treat. Tatiana
